CAADRIA 2021 Guide for Authors

This page offers some general instructions and guidelines for authors, in addition to the userguide prepared by the team behind the ProceeDings paper submission system.

General Submission Principles

Authors of accepted abstracts, as well as new authors are invited to submit Full Papers for the second stage of the CAADRIA double-blind peer-review process. Inclusion of full papers in the conference presentations and proceedings publications will be subject to review acceptance, to compliance with submission deadlines and formatting guidelines, and to payment of the conference registration fee.

Paper Length

There is no maximum word count for full papers, but a limit of 10 pages when entering the text and images into the ProceeDings system. We recommend to prepare the full paper in your normal word editing software, aiming at a lenght of ca. ~3000-4000 words. Then enter the content into the system using manual copy-paste or the Import Text wizard. Use the Print function to generate a PDF and inspect it carefully to evaluate the content preview and page length.

The 10 page limit applies to all content combined, including main text, images, captions and references. The number of images, their size and location within the text will affect the number of words that the paper can contain and it is recommended to edit your paper in a comprehensive manner to achieve an efficient and well ordered arrangement of content on your pages. The finalisation of your paper will require you to do several rounds of editing content and visually inspecting the output.

The total page count can be less that 10 pages but must be an even number (6 or 8 pages).

Paper Content

Papers submitted to CAADRIA should contain original, previously unpublished work and not be submitted to other conferences or journals. The text will be automatically scanned by our plagiarism detection software and may be rejected if there is an unusual similarity with other academic publications.

We welcome high-quality papers that present research findings and original contributions to the field of computational research in architecture and urbanism. The work should be positioned in relation to previous research in the field concerned. In relation to the conference theme of ‘Projections’, we encourage authors to broaden their discussion on the research findings, towards further development and societal impact of the work in relation to pressing global or local challenges.

Paper Structure

Papers should be structured according to scientific paper formatting conventions, using sections that contain the abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, acknowledgements, and references.

The Abstract should be between 160 – 200 words and should contain the problem statement, article aim, original contribution, research question, methodology, and main conclusion.

The Introduction should include the problem statement, a literature review to identify what already has been done, and the research question.

The Methods can consist of several sections with headers relevant to the research.

The Acknowledgements is an optional section that can be used to thank those who helped with the research or made other important contributions.

Authors should include all and only people who have contributed to the writing of the article, following the Vancouver Convention on authorship. Corresponding authors should obtain approval of the final publication of all listed co-authors.

References will be formatted automatically in the right format by the ProceeDings system, using the manual entering of publication information or using the Import Bibliography wizard. When entering references manually, please verify the accuracy and completeness of all information.

Figures

Images, tables and graphs should be prepared as high-quality pixel based graphics. Use .jpg for photos and renderings (300 dpi) or .png for graphs, line drawings, etc. (600 dpi). With the CAADRIA page format, the standard width of figures is 120 mm, which translates to a minimum image width of 1500 or 3000 pixels for 300 and 600 dpi respectively. The final image width can be reduced in Proceedings. If text is included in your graphs or diagrams, please make sure the text is clearly legible, compared to a minimum font size of 7 points when printed. For more information, refer to the instructions and help inside the ProceeDings system.

While the preview function of ProceeDings shows a low-resolution version of your images in the preview PDF, please make sure that all your images are included correctly in the paper and that the images are of sufficient quality.

Figures should be well-readable and augment the text with additional information. If that is not the case (for instance: Grasshopper screenshots), editors may remove them during layout without further notice.

All figures and tables must be referenced within the body of the paper (e.g. “see figure 1” or “see table 1”). Images, tables and graphs should be inserted directly after or close to their description in the text. All figures should be captioned, please verify that the numbering (‘Figure 1’) is not duplicated in the text field of the caption.

Authors are expected to ensure that third-party materials that are copyright(s) are allowed to be republished, in which case the necessary credits should be included. This applies predominantly to photos showing work that does not belong to the author(s); if unsure these figures should be omitted.

Style Guidelines

Please use consistent style of English (British, American, etc.) spelling consistently throughout your manuscript.

References to literature should be included using in-text citations (not footnotes or endnotes), following Harvard style guidelines. Citations can refer to a work by a single author (Smith, 2014), two authors, (Smith and Jones, 2014), three authors (Smith, Jones and Davies, 2014), four or more authors (Smith et al., 2014). When you quote directly from a source or paraphrase a specific passage, your in-text citation must include a page number to specify where ‘the relevant passage is located’ (Jones et al., 2016, p. 155).

Please use single quotation marks, except where ‘a quotation is “within” a quotation’. Long quotations should be indented without quotation marks.

Titles and heading should use capitalisation of main words, e.g. “The Title of the Next Section”.

Please do NOT enter any titles or headings using ALL CAPITALS.

The ProceeDings system will automatically number headings for sections and sub-sections. Please ensure that numbers are not duplicated in the text field of the headers.
